Bee Pollen and Raw Propolis

Pollen and propolis are distinct hive materials. Bees collect pollen as a food source and gather plant resins that become propolis. Understory Harvest offers hive products only as seasons and harvests allow.

Two different materials from the hive

Bee pollen

Pollen granules are collected from plants by foraging bees. Their color and composition vary with local blooms. People may use pollen as a food ingredient, but nutritional content is naturally variable and it should not be treated as medicine.

Raw propolis

Propolis is a resinous material bees make from plant resins, wax, and other hive materials. Raw propolis may contain natural debris and has a sticky, aromatic character. It is not the same as a standardized extract.

Use caution with bee products

Bee pollen and propolis can cause allergic reactions. People with pollen, bee-product, or severe allergy concerns should consult a qualified health professional before use. Stop using a product and seek appropriate care if a reaction occurs. No content on this page diagnoses, prevents, or treats disease.

From healthy forage to hive material

The diversity of plants around an apiary influences what bees bring home. Our pollinator habitat resource explains why bloom succession, water, shelter, and chemical-conscious care matter.
