Small family-owned and operated in Haymarket, Virginia. Since 2020, Understory Harvest has focused on honey, bees, education, and sustainable land stewardship rooted in the nature surrounding our operation.
Our beekeeping journey started in 2020, and officially we became a business in 2025 after a few ups and downs and learning experiences. What began as a small family-owned and operated effort grew from a desire to work closer with bees, local food, and the land around us. We produce Virginia honey, support thriving colonies, raise and reserve seasonal bee products, and occasionally offer culinary and medicinal mushroom extracts when available. Our focus is sustainable operation: investing in the surrounding understory, forage, trees, and habitat while keeping the areas around the bees clear of pesticides, herbicides, and unnecessary chemicals.
Our beekeeping is tied to stewardship. We invest in the understory, forage, trees, and habitat surrounding the apiary, and we work to keep the operation clear of pesticides, herbicides, and unnecessary chemicals. Every jar, colony, program, and occasional mushroom extract offering comes from that same sustainable approach.
Research-led wellness from hive, mushroom, and habitat
Our products are guided by traditional use, customer experience, and modern research. Bee pollen is valued as a nutrient-dense food that naturally contains plant proteins, amino acids, trace minerals, B vitamins, and polyphenol antioxidants. Raw honey provides quick natural carbohydrates, local floral character, soothing throat-coating texture, and plant-derived antioxidant compounds. Breathing near an active hive is a sensory apitherapy practice centered on warm hive air carrying aromas from wax, honey, propolis, pollen, and plant resins; people often seek it as a calming, grounding experience while research continues to explore respiratory and wellness effects. Bee venom therapy is approached carefully and by appointment only: venom peptides such as melittin are studied for inflammatory signaling, circulation, and pain-response pathways, but bee venom can cause serious allergic reactions and is not a cure-all or substitute for medical care.
A healthy life is tied to a healthy environment. Clean forage, living soil, diverse trees, mushrooms, pollinators, and chemical-conscious stewardship all support the quality of what comes from the land. Understory Harvest is always researching what else can be done to improve both sides of that relationship: healthier products for people and a healthier habitat for the bees, fungi, and understory that make them possible.

Understory Harvest is a small family-run operation built around bees, food, education, and a chemical-conscious landscape. Our offerings change with the season because the work follows the colonies, weather, forage, and harvest.
We keep a local copy of beekeeping club newsletters and resources that may be useful to our customers, students, and fellow beekeepers.
